With seven nominations, Katy Perry leads the way for this year’s MTV Europe Music Awards. Though the pop superstar can expect some stiff competition on the night from the likes of Ariana Grande (with six nominations), 5 Seconds of Summer and Pharrell Williams (five apiece).
Katy is in the hunt for best pop, best female, best live, best look and her Prism hit “Dark Horse” ft. Juicy J is up for best song and best video. She’s also nominated in the curiously-titled biggest fans category, where her band of followers will face off against supporters of 5 Seconds of Summer, Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, Nicki Minaj and One Direction.
One Direction has chances in four categories, as do Nicki Minaj, Iggy Azalea, Eminem, Sam Smith and Kiesza.
The annual gala will take place for the first time at the 13,000-capacity Hydro Arena in Glasgow, Scotland, on Nov. 9, and it’ll be beamed to MTV channels around the world. MTV will host the EMA U.S. pre-show telecast from Miami at 7:00 p.m. ET on the big day. The music TV broadcaster will announce performers for the main show and the U.S pre-show telecast in due course.
The MTV EMAs was first held in Berlin back in 1994. This year’s 20th anniversary marks just the second time the gala has been hosted by Scotland, following an edition in Edinburgh in 2003. The decision to visit Glasgow makes a lot of sense. The city hosted the Commonwealth Games earlier this year, and all eyes are currently trained on Scotland as its residents prepare to vote this Thursday on the independence referendum.
Voting on the MTV EMAs, however, is already open for all categories at mtvema.com.
