Suspected Thug killed after a two-hour stand-off with Mombasa police

A suspected thug has been shot dead in a dramatic chase by detectives from the special Crime Prevention Unit in Mombasa.

The police were forced to throw tear gas canisters to flush out the suspect after a standoff that lasted for more than two hours at a residential area in Kizingo on Tuesday afternoon.
A team which comprised of the General Service Unit , and CID officers cordoned the area where the gangsters were hiding hours after they staged a robbery at a showroom.

Mombasa police boss Robert Kitur said the gangster was in a group of three who were being trailed by police officers after they stole Sh200,000 from the showroom along Moi avenue.
He said that the gunmen upon realizing they were being trailed, escaped to the residential areas within Kizingo where they were confronted by the officers.

“Two of his accomplices managed to vanish, but unfortunately his days had come to an end. He was killed in an exchange of fire with our officers,”  Kitur mentioned.
Cops said the suspect identified as Rogers Rajab was among three notorious gangsters believed to be behind recent robberies that have hit the coastal city.

Talking to the media at the scene of the incident, Kitur said Rajab is suspected to have been among three gunmen who raided the popular Shaam restaurant situated within Kizingo and robbed all customers at gunpoint on Monday night.

The four ordered everybody to lie down before taking all valuables from them. Kitur said the four have been operating using motorbikes within the Ganjoni and Kizingo business districts.
“We have launched a major crackdown on motorbikes that we suspect are being used to commit robberies within Mombasa. Those who don’t have genuine documents will be arrested and charged," said Kitur.

The police boss appealed for public support to deal with the rising  insecurity that have hit Mombasa recently.
