The two University of Nairobi students killed on Saturday are said to have stolen laptops from their colleagues.
According to the vice chancellor professor Peter Mbithi the two killed were among a gang of five thieves who have been terrorizing students in the campus and are alleged to have robbed a student at around 3 am that morning.
Three of the five escaped while the rest were seriously beaten before university security guards rescued them, but it was too late. They both succumbed to their injuries when they were being rushed to hospital..
According to blogger Robert Alai, the students's death had nothing to do with the alleged theft but was university politics. He has now called the students leaders to name the killers.
The student leader Babu Owino has since denied the claims and threaten to sue bloggers who link him to the incident.
